Dr Barry York was born in London in 1954 to a Maltese father and English mother. He has written three books and scores of articles about the history of Maltese migration to Australia. He has also recorded hundreds of oral history interviews documenting Australia’s immigration history. In 2005, he was awarded the Order of Australia.
Barry will talk about his family history on his father’s side. His father was born Loreto Meilak in Sliema in 1918, to Gozitan parents from Ghajnsielem. Loreto changed his name to York in London in 1947. Why did he change his name? How did he influence Barry in his interest in the Maltese in Australia? Did growing up for 30 years in the multicultural suburb of Brunswick, Melbourne, influence Barry’s interest in researching and writing about migrant communities.
