On Saturday 28 May 2011 Malta voted in a historic referendum about the introduction of divorce. According to the official results published by the Electoral Commission, a total of 232,691 votes were cast, of which 230,518 votes were valid. 122,546 or 52.7 per cent of the valid votes cast were in favour of divorce, 107,971 or 46.4 per cent voted against and 2,173 or 0.9 per cent votes were invalid.
The referendum question was as follows:
“Do you agree with the introduction of the choice of divorce in the case of a married couple who has been separated or has been living apart for at least four (4) years, and where there is no reasonable hope for reconciliation between the spouses, whilst at the same time ensuring that adequate maintenance is guaranteed and the welfare of the children is safeguarded?”
