Officers for the Federation of Maltese Living Abroad (FMLA) were elected for a two-year term beginning in January 2012.
Formed in 2010 after the Convention of Maltese Living Abroad Convention in March of that year, the FMLA has as one of its goals to keep the Maltese communities living abroad knowledgeable about their citizenship rights, culture, and heritage. It publishes a newsletter distributed electronically, The Maltese Link.
Voting took place in December electronically and those eligible for voting were members listed in the register of affiliated associations in accordance with the FMLA’s Constitution. Three electoral officers organized and oversaw a formal voting process for the election and included Eddie Micallef (Melbourne, Australia), Louis Vella (San Francisco, USA), and Fr. Victor Camilleri (London, UK).
As of December 2011, the FMLA had a total of 46 affiliated member associations with a combined membership of close to 9,000 made up of organizations from the following countries:
